I appreciated your article. As a previous Protestant and now a Catholic, I can relate to the difficulty of confronting our sin. It is not easy, nor does it ever become easy. Turning from God's love and accepting the lies of Satan are so human, yet it happens to everyone but me. LOL I can only say how wonderful it is to let Christ take my burdens and continually make me a new person. My experience has taught me that I need conversion everyday and that my biggest challenge is to empty myself of ME and make room for God.

Thanks John. I've gotten lots of good response. If only confession were as easy to actually DO as it is to write about....

Mark, This is a great post! I just finished my ThM thesis on confession as a means of reconciliation. I've found that confessing to the person wronged (not just to a friend) is really powerful.

Thanks for sharing, Ryan. I agree: confession does not need to turn into therapy. We should encounter the grace of God in confession. Strategies for remediation are helpful but not the point.

Mark, this post has been sitting in my reader for a while now and I keep meaning to get to reading it... I'm glad I finally did. Confession is something us protestants need to reclaim! I was taking a class last week and the professor was an Anglican priest. There was a brief discussion of "accountability groups" in the class which led to a sidebar on confession. His insight was great in reminding us that one of the best things we can do for a confessor is look them in the eyes and say, "you're forgiven." What a joy to let the gospel truth of forgiveness give in Christ penetrate the heart of sinful men and women. I think the only thing I'd add to your thoughts is that we need to not turn confession into mere discussion on how to "stop sinning." We need the gospel to work in our hearts... maybe we'd be more open to confession if it didn't always turn into a, "you're forgiven by grace, but now lets figure out the 10 steps to really get you free."

Thanks for the post. I really appreciated it!
