Ed,

I've been reading this site for awhile, but i've never posted.

Thanks for the advice, I found it very insightful. I live in Pennsylvania, and this last summer I had the opportunity to work in a program call "Chaplains in the Park." I was permitted to visit campsites at a statepark on Saturday night, and Sunday morning I gave lead a worship service. I did this 15 times, and I was the only person in the park who only had one service on Sundays. One person I meet was given 3 parks for each Sunday.. going from 0 to 45 sermons in 3 months.

Honestly, I have been (and am) kind of scared of the whole preaching thing. Yet, this was really great because the crowds were fairly small and gave some good feed back. Mostly, it was encouraging. Preaching is hard for me, yet I hear preachers like Mark Driscoll say that it took several years for them to find their preaching voice. I'm encouraged by hearing about how people had to grow; it's awesome to see how God's grace works itself out in people's lives.

If I recall, I only preached two times in seminary classes (neither of which I would call full sermons). When I was called to pastor my first church during seminary, I had preached less than ten times in my life!

I have often said that first church really took one on the chin for the kingdom!

I believe there is no substitute for preaching real sermons to real people. More preaching classes back then would have had limited impact.

Some preaching courses now would be fantastic, now that I am fiften years into pastoral ministry. It is like what I have felt about premarriage counseling being wasted on the premarried. Let me see them as they approach their first anniversary, when they are really interested.
